Phil Raschker named World Masters Athlete of the Year

Philippa (Phil) Raschker, of Marietta, Georgia, has been named Female World Masters Athlete of the Year by the World Masters Athletics Association (WMA), the organization designated by the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) to conduct the worldwide sport of masters track and field.The selection was made on October 28. The WMA recognized Raschker for her 10 gold-winning performances at the World Masters Championships Meet in Italy in September, the 12 world records she established during her competitions this year, and her 27 gold medals at national championship meets in the United States. more >>

Jamieson wins world’s top Masters’ Athletics award >>

Champion walker Andrew Jamieson has won the most prestigious awardin Masters’ Athletics, the IAAF Masters’ Athlete of the Year. Jamieson, 61, will be presented with his award at a gala dinner in Monacoon November 25.The presentation will be made in conjunction with the IAAF’s Athlete of the Year awards, for which the male nominees are US sprinter Tyson Gay,Ethiopian distance running legend Haile Gebrselassie and champion sprinthurdler Liu Xiang, of China.The female nominees are the world’s top middle distance runner Meseret Defar, of Ethiopia, decathlete Carolina Kluft of Sweden, and Croatian highjumper Blanka Vlasic. more >>

Very unexpectedly, WMA President Cesare Beccalli died on December 26, 2007 at the age of 73, while at his winter residence in Brazil.
This is the second time in the current election period that the World Masters Athletics association lost one of its most prolific experts. In November 2005, Torsten Carlius died (then WMA Secretary), and now the masters movement has lost another most respected leader. more >>

Kozo Haraguchi break world record, see the video
A 95-year-old Japanese man has set an athletics world record in the southern city of Miyazaki - breaking the 100-metres time for men aged 95-99. Kozo Haraguchi clocked 22.04 seconds as the sole runner in a race held in rain to slash the previous world mark of 24.01 held by Austrian, Erwin Jaskulski.
